1 to ask someone for information: “Are you getting married?” the television interviewer inquired.
(+ about): I am writing to inquire about your advertisement in The Times. | inquire whether/why/how etc: The waiter inquired whether we would like to sit near the window. —see ask
2 inquire within used on notices, especially in shop windows, to mean that you can find out more about something inside: Vacancies - inquire within.
— inquirer noun (C) inquire after sb/sth phrasal verb (T) to ask someone about someone else, about how they are and what they are doing: He called me aside to inquire after my daughter. inquire into sth phrasal verb (T) to ask questions in order to get more information about something: The investigation will inquire into the exact circumstances of the sale. inquire sth of sb phrasal verb (T) formal to ask someone a question about something: He nervously inquired of his host whether he could light a cigarette.
